Resident Life

Life on the Big Island

Life as a resident on Hawaiʻi Island is as unique and rewarding as the training itself. When the workday ends, the island becomes your playground — from the white-sand beaches of Kona to the lush rainforests and waterfalls of Hilo. Residents often spend their weekends snorkeling with manta rays, hiking volcano trails, exploring local farmers’ markets, or just catching a sunset surf session after clinic.

Hawaiʻi Island’s close-knit community makes it easy to find friends and adventure. You’ll enjoy year-round outdoor activities, incredible local food, and a relaxed island lifestyle that naturally balances the intensity of residency training. Whether you’re sharing a beach barbecue with co-residents, volunteering at local outreach events, or exploring hidden waterfalls, you’ll quickly discover why living and learning here is truly special.

Tentative Patient Schedule

We work four 10 hour Clinic days, Monday- Friday with one weekday off. NYU provides a curriculum outside of your clinical hours. Expect to have your own dedicated chair and assistant to see a full day of restorative care. Of course, as you learn and get faster the speed of the procedures and number of patients per day will vary.
